Dr. Sarita Boodhoo

Dr. Sarita Boodhoo is a social activist, writer, and journalist. She is well versed in Indology and Indian Diasporic Studies. She has an in-depth knowledge of Bhojpuri and Bhojpuri culture and heritage, having conducted significant grassroots research in the Bhojpuri Belt of India and elsewhere. Her publications derived from this work are highly referred to and well received by academicians, linguists, and researchers worldwide.

Dr. Boodhoo set up the Mauritius Bhojpuri Institute in 1982 as an NGO. As Founder Director, she presented several ballets, conducted Bhojpuri Weeks across Mauritius, and produced CDs. This helped to bring esteem to the Bhojpuri language, folklore, and oral traditions and ensured their transmission. She took the initiative to research the first settlement of Girmitiyas at Antoinette Phooliyar, where she created a temporary immigrant village and organized a major 7-day national celebration. She was also instrumental in proposing to the National Organising Committee the setting up of a monument dedicated to the Girmitiyas at Antoinette Phooliyar.
