Sh. Amarjeet Sinha is a distinguished former IAS officer (Bihar cadre, 1983 batch) with over 40 years of experience in governance, especially in rural development and the social sector. He retired as Secretary, Department of Rural Development, Government of India in 2019 and later served as Advisor to the Prime Minister (till July 2021), focusing on social and rural initiatives.
Currently, he is a Senior Fellow at Centre for Social and Economic Progress and chairs PRADAN, while also serving on advisory boards of HelpAge India and Sampark Foundation.
He played a key role in designing major national programmes such as Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and National Rural Health Mission, and contributed significantly to governance reforms across livelihoods, health, education, and social welfare. He also led initiatives like the Gram Swaraj Abhiyan.
Sinha is a noted public policy thinker, having authored 14 books and numerous articles on inclusive development. His prominent works include An India for Everyone and The Last Mile. His research focuses on multidimensional poverty, governance, and human development.
He has also been deeply involved in teaching and mentoring, training IAS officers for over 35 years at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration and teaching public policy at institutions like Indian School of Business and Ashoka University.
An alumnus of St. Stephen’s College, he topped Delhi University and is a recipient of prestigious scholarships including the Rhodes Scholarship.
