Jyoti Yadav

Jyoti Yadav is a journalist based in New Delhi, India. I report on the transformative changes taking place in Indian villages and towns. As a multimedia journalist a crucial skill for any 21st century reporter — with a sizeable social media following across platforms, I view audience engagement as just as important as reporting and writing a story. Most of my career has been as a ground reporter and long form writer at ThePrint, India’s leading digital newsroom, where I was one of the founding reporters of its investigative features team. Over the years, my work has captured the social shifts that often lurk unnoticed beneath the breaking news cycle. Born and brought up in a village in Haryana, I fought my way out of the state’s stifling patriarchal set-up to reach Delhi University to pursue my graduate and post-graduate degrees in English Literature. In my college, I learnt to wear the critical lens to examine the condition of women of Haryana. In journalism, I wear both my rural and urban lenses to bring an element of critical intersectionality to my reporting and writing. I offer a rare, insider-outsider perspective to social, political and cultural features. Women in oppressive societies do not just need any job; they need jobs where they can express themselves and their lived experiences. That is why I chose journalism as my career. Being multilingual and embracing both rural and urban selves, I am best equipped to represent the changing and the unchanging India’s stories for a wider audience. In my decade old career, I have reported on significant markers of contemporary India’s struggles with caste, social justice, oppression, and the violence faced by women, minorities, and the working class. I view my work and mission as a woman journalist as one making a critical intervention in India’s national journey.
