Dr. Kapil Kapoor (born 17 November 1940) is a distinguished Indian scholar and linguist, known for his significant contributions to literary theory, linguistics, and Indian knowledge systems. He served as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Rector) of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) from 1999 to 2002 and was also Dean of the School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies. During his tenure at JNU, he was Professor at the Centre for Linguistics and English and concurrently associated with the Centre for Sanskrit Studies until his retirement in 2005. He has also delivered lectures at prestigious international forums, including the House of Lords, UK.
Over the years, Dr. Kapoor has held several key academic and leadership positions, including Chairman of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), Shimla, and Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi International Hindi University, Wardha (2014–2018). Currently, he serves on important national bodies such as the Indian Historical Records Committee and the High-Level Committee on Indian Knowledge Systems under the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
