Dr. Varsha Das (b. Nov. 1942 in Mumbai) has done her M.A. in Sanskrit and Hindi from Bombay University and Doctorate in Education, on ‘Potentials of Traditional Performing Arts for Inculcating Scientific Temper’ from Osmania University, Hyderabad.
She has more than 100 publications to her credit. They include originals, translations and adaptations, in the genres of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, radio plays and books for children. She writes in Gujarati, Hindi and English, and translates from Bangla, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi and Odia. Her latest publications are Odia Sahitya-Darshan, a collection of various forms of Odia literature translated into Gujarati and published by Goorjar Granthratna Karyalay; collection of her Radio Plays in Hindi is published by Rajkamal Prakashan in three volumes; Looking for Gandhi in Our Times is a compilation of her lectures on Gandhiji, published by Publications Division, Ministry of I & B; Adhunik Gujarati Kavitaen, is a poetry collection of Gujarati poems translated into Hindi, published by Sahitya Akademi; and Kavita Kavita Kavita, is a collection of her poems written in Gujarati, Hindi and English, published by Navajivan Prakashan Mandir. She has been writing on visual arts for the past 60 years.
She is the recipient of several awards, the first one was at the age of 18, received from the Gujarat Government for her book for children Jagatnaan Paatanagaro. She has also been awarded by the organizations like Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi and Gujarati Sahitya Parishad, Ahmedabad for the translation of Odia poems into Gujarati, National Women Excellence Award by Women International Network, Lifetime Achievement Award by The Delhi Gujarati Samaj, Salutation awarded by the Legends of India for promoting Indian Art Forms among others. For her contribution in Humanistic Education and Peace she is awarded Hon. Professorship by the Soka University, Tokyo.
She has worked with the National Book Trust, India for three decades in different capacities, also as the Acting Director. She is the former Director of National Gandhi Museum, New Delhi, and an active member of Bharat Soka Gakkai for more than 45 years which works for peace, culture and education. She is a life member and a trustee of several educational and literary organizations.
