His Excellency, Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam

His Excellency Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam is the Prime Minister of the Republic of Mauritius, a physician, lawyer, and veteran statesman. One of the country’s longest-serving political leaders, he has played a significant role in shaping its democratic governance, economic development, and international relations. He returned to office in November 2024.

Born on 14 July 1947, Dr Ramgoolam is the son of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the founding Prime Minister and “Father of the Mauritian Nation”. He studied medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, later earned an LL.B. (Hons.) from the London School of Economics, and was called to the Bar of the Inner Temple in London. He practised as a physician before entering politics and became leader of the Mauritius Labour Party in 1991. He has served as Prime Minister from 1995 to 2000, from 2005 to 2014, and again from November 2024, following his coalition’s victory in the general election.
