Our Story: How the Festival Began

The Nalanda Literature Festival was born out of a deep reverence for the ancient wisdom of Nalanda, a place that once stood as a beacon of knowledge, philosophy, and cultural exchange. Nalanda, the world's first residential university, flourished from the 5th to the 12th century CE, attracting scholars from across Asia—China, Korea, Japan, Tibet, Mongolia, and Southeast Asia. It was a melting pot of ideas, where the pursuit of knowledge transcended borders, languages, and cultures.

The festival was conceived as a modern tribute to this legacy. Our founders, a group of scholars, writers, and cultural enthusiasts, envisioned a platform where the spirit of Nalanda could be revived. They sought to create a space where the wisdom of the past could inspire the present, fostering dialogue, creativity, and intellectual growth. The festival is not just a celebration of literature but a homage to the timeless values of curiosity, collaboration, and the pursuit of truth.

Today, the Nalanda Literature Festival stands as a testament to the enduring relevance of Nalanda’s wisdom. In a world grappling with division and uncertainty, the festival reminds us of the power of knowledge to unite, transform, and enlighten. It is a call to rediscover the lessons of the past and apply them to the challenges of our time.
