Sh. Geoffrey Hinton

Born in London in 1947, Shri Geoffrey Hinton earned a degree in experimental psychology before completing a PhD in artificial intelligence. In the 1980s he moved to Canada, where he became a professor at the University of Toronto. At a time when many researchers doubted neural networks, he continued his work in the belief that they could transform computing, and his persistence led to major breakthroughs in deep learning. He has also worked at Google, advancing AI technologies alongside his academic research.

In 2024 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, shared with John J. Hopfield, for foundational discoveries and inventions enabling machine learning with artificial neural networks. He also received the Turing Award in 2018, together with Yoshua Bengio and Yann LeCun, for pioneering advances in deep learning.
