Following the widespread cultural revolution initiated by Saint Namdev, Maharashtra witnessed turbulent political and social upheavals. Amidst these challenging times arose a literary giant whose fearless voice, moral integrity, and piercing satire inspired common citizens and monarchs alike. His name was Saint Tukaram.
At the Nalanda Literature Festival (NLF), we honor literary icons who demonstrated immense moral courage and used the written word as an instrument of social justice. Saint Tukaram stands as a towering symbol of this ethos. His poetry was not merely a medium of spiritual expression; it was a uncompromising critique of hypocrisy, social dogma, and moral corruption.
Saint Tukaram composed over 4,000 Abhangs, creating a massive literary treasury known as the Tukaram Gatha. Written in the authentic, everyday idiom of Dehu's rural landscape, his poetry connected directly with the masses. When orthodoxy attempted to suppress his voice by drowning his manuscripts in the Indrayani River, local tradition holds that his devotion and the sheer power of his words brought the literary works back to life. This event solidified his status as an immortal literary force.
Tukaram’s literature emphasized self-reliance, moral purity, and radical social equality. His teachings profoundly influenced Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, shaping the ethical foundation of the Maratha Empire. By elevating the voices of the marginalized, Tukaram proved that literature can withstand oppression and remain an eternal beacon of truth—a legacy that NLF proudly celebrates today.
