Poetry in Melody – The Symbiosis of Marathi Literature and Cinema

"Sāhitya un saṅgītācyā sangamātun kāvya gharotgharī pōhōchalē!"

— "Through the confluence of literature and music, poetry reached every household!"

The boundary between formal poetry and popular cinema has always been beautifully porous in Maharashtra. Through film lyrics, theatre songs (Natyageet), and independent musical albums (Bhavgeet), high literary poetry stepped out of academic books and integrated directly into the daily lives of millions.

Legendary poets lent their literary craftsmanship to the medium of music and cinema. G. D. Madgulkar (Ga Di Ma) stands as a monumental figure in this fusion. His epic creation Geet Ramayana—a sequence of 56 songs—earned him the title of 'Modern Valmiki' for its unmatched poetic sweetness and narrative grace. His film scripts and songs defined the golden era of Marathi cinema.

Similarly, poets like Shanta Shelke, Sudhir Moghe, and Jagdish Khebudkar wrote songs that carried profound philosophical depth, romantic elegance, and folk authenticity. The musical compositions of Sudhir Phadke (Babuji) and Hridaynath Mangeshkar elevated these literary lyrics into immortal cultural treasures.

This musical symbiosis proved that high art can achieve widespread popular appeal without compromising its literary integrity. The Nalanda Literature Festival (NLF) recognizes performance-based poetry and lyrics as vital components of regional artistic heritage, celebrating their unifying national appeal.
